1. What is the non-lucrative residency?

The non-lucrative residency is a residency permit that authorizes all nationals from non-EU countries to reside in Spain without carrying out any labor activity by showing that sufficient financial means for themselves and, if applicable, the members of their family.

2. Where can I apply for it?

Visa applications must be made at the Spanish Consulate in the country of origin or residence.

3. What are the application requirements?

  • Not be a citizen of a State of the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, or family member of citizens of these countries to whom the regime of citizen of the EU applies.
  • Not be in Spain in an irregular situation.
  • Have no criminal record in Spain or in the countries where they have resided for the past five years, for offenses defined in Spin\’s Penal Code.
  • Have a public or private health insurance policy with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain.
  • Have sufficient financial resources for themselves and their families during their residence in Spain.
  • Medical Certificate stating that the applicant does not suffer any disease that may have serious public health impact according to the International  Health Regulations of 2005.

Proof of enough periodic income (investments, annuities, sabbaticals and any other source of income) to live in Spain without working

The availability of sufficient financial resources can be credited through any documents that allow to verify a recurrent perception of sufficient income or the possession of assets that guarantee this perception of income. 5. Can I get the non-lucrative residency extend to other family members?

The non-lucrative residency authorization can also benefit the relatives of the applicant under his care. It can be extended to spouses, children, etc.

However, the applicant will need to prove that he has sufficient financial resources for him and his family for the period of time for which they wish to reside in Spain

6. What benefits do I get?

The residence permit authorizes a foreign national to remain in Spain without carrying out any labor activity.

In addition, the applicant may move freely within the territory of the Schengen States for a maximum of three months.

7. How long does the permit last?

Initial residence permit: 1 year.

Renewals: 2 years.
